As a part of the #16DaysActivism2021 Against Gender-Based Violence, Body & Data released research on “Mapping Laws Relevant to Online Violence in Nepal”, where we analyzed Nepal’s existing laws surrounding online violence to assess their sufficiency/effectiveness in addressing the issue. The following laws have been analyzed from the perspective of digital rights with a focus on gender and sexuality: Constitution 2015, Criminal Code 2017, Electronic Transaction Act 2008, Privacy Act 2018, Information Technology (IT) Bill* 2019, among others.

You will also find that through the entire report, three human rights lenses have been used as the framework of the study - Right to Privacy, Freedom of Expression, and Freedom from Violence.

In November, Body & Data co-created a Feminist Tech Exchange: Digital Security Workshop with our lovely participants from Madhesh. It was an amazing experience to learn and share different skills and knowledge around digital rights and security needs and concerns, feminist internet, data privacy, along with hands-on sessions around different digital security tools.

During the past few months, Body & Data collaborated with different women human rights defenders organizations that work with marginalized communities and issues in Nepal. We facilitated digital security workshops focusing on assessing organization-based digital security threats, strategies development, and capacity building along with tools sharing activities.

With the objective to create a discourse on gender-based violence experienced by women, queer individuals, and marginalized groups through a holistic perspective, i.e. violence happening in civic spaces (both in offline and online settings), Body & Data in collaboration with WOREC Nepal organized the Internet Samwaad on Freedom from Violence, as a part of the #16DayActivismCampaign event. The speakers shared the importance of discussing violence beyond the physical spaces, and also looked at various laws relating to violence in Nepal through a critical feminist lens while pointing its loopholes.

नोवेम्बेरको महिनामा हामीले फेमिनिस्ट टेक - डिजिटल सुरक्ष्या कार्यशाला मधेशको सह-सिर्जना गर्यौं हाम्रो एकदमै रमाइला सहभागी साथिहरुसंग। यस कार्यशालामा नया कुरा र शिपहरु सिक्ने र डिजिटल अधिकार र सुरक्षाको विभिन्न कुराहरु र आवय्श्यक्ताहरुको पहिचान गर्ने, फेमिनिस्ट इन्टरनेट, डाटाको गोपनियता र सुरक्षा सम्बन्धि शिप र उपकरणको साटासाट गर्ने मौका पनि पायौं।

गत महिनाहरुमा बडी एण्ड डाटाले विभिन्न महिला र सिमान्तिकृत समुदायको अधिकारमा काम गर्ने संस्थाहरुसंग मिलेर डिजिटल अधिकार र सुरक्षा सम्बन्धि तालिम गर्यौं। यसमा संस्थागत रूपमा के कस्ट डिजिटल सुरक्षाका खतराहरु छन्, र यसलाई प्रतिकार गर्न सकिने रणनीति र उपायहरू खोज्ने संगै डिजिटल सुरक्षाका उपकरणको तालिम पनि दिने मौका पायौं ।

महिला, क्वेयर व्यक्तिहरू, र सीमान्तकृत समूहहरूले अनुभव गरेका लैङ्गिक हिंसाको समग्र परिप्रेक्ष्यमा छलफल गर्ने उद्देश्यले हामीले WOREC संगको सहकार्यमा यस कार्यक्रम गयौं। यस कार्यक्रम १६ दिने अभियानको एक भागको रूपमा हामीले गरेको थियोउ जसमा हामीले अनलाइन र अफलाइन ठाउँहरुमा हिंसा कस्तो देखिन्छ भनेर छलफल गर्यौं। वक्ताहरूले हिंसालाई भौतिक स्थानभन्दा बाहिर पनि छलफल गर्नुपर्ने र नेपालमा हिंसा सम्बन्धी विभिन्न कानूनहरूलाई फेमिनिस्ट दृष्टिकोणबाट हेर्दै यसको कमीहरूलाई पनि देखाए।
