Digital Algorithms, Mis/Disinformation, and Elections in Nepal
A Study of the 2022 Elections
This paper examines the role of digital algorithms in amplifying election-related mis/disinformation during Nepal’s: 2022 elections and assesses the adequacy of Nepal’s legal response. As political communication increasingly shifts to social media, digital algorithms shape voters perceptions in ways that may distort electoral decision-making.
The paper also looks at the legislative and statutory frameworks within Nepal to tackle mis/disinformation in the dection period. It further puts forth recommendations on the regulatory and structural reforms necessary to strengthen Nepal’s institutional capacity to address election-related disinformation. In doing so, the study aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on safeguarding electoral integrity in an increasingly digital political environment.
