Privacy Consultation Findings: What Online and Data Privacy Means to Communities

Privacy could mean different things to people based on their realities and identities. We held consultations with young women, queer folks, trans and intersex people and women with disability to understand, reflect, and share privacy concerns, online and offline. Here’s some of the findings!

Collected information can make us feel vulnerable; Due to the pandemic and being with their parents/siblings all day with limited access to electronic devices, there has been instances of privacy breach because of the chat history/search history, etc.; sexuality, behavior, choices and experiences of coming out; being outed without consent is a privacy breach - online or offline; concern over face app and other biometric needing app because there are apps that claim that they can tell people’s sexuality by scanning faces, fingerprints; online communities to express our queerness and sexuality is important

Text consists of "Episode 3: Trans and intersex folks' Privacy: Online" We often use a different account if they are not out, so they only share information to people who they deeply trust; the profile for online shopping is created using official documents where we have our deadname used and while encountering delivery we need to prove our identity with our official documents which makes it awkward for us; constantly exposed to advertisement for the gender we identify before our transition; option to remain anonymous or use pseudo names gives us agency and autonomy to control our online personality; Privacy is perceived in relation to self-identity, dignity, self-respect, control of one’s personal information and experiences, freedom in accordance to their choice and consent, a space for comfort

Text consists of "Episode 4: Women with Disability's Privacy: Online Discussing about our disability in our absence and spreading private information while doing so; Sharing personal information to unknown people was a concern and hence we use other tactics such as giving alternative contact details to reach out to them; Friends and families snoop around our personal electronic belongings like phone, laptop, ask about social media passwords; to maintain the device privacy, we can go to our privacy settings and, manage what apps has location to our contacts, location, text messages, phone calls, etc; People often upload our photos or save our photos from social media without their consent.
